The Botwood Basin is an emerging gold camp in central Newfoundland of Canada. The Botwood Basin was initially recognized as an epithermal gold environment by one of the founding principals of Altius Minerals Corp., Mr. Roland Butler in the late 1990s. In mid 2001, Mr. Butler visited operating mines in the Carlin area and convinced himself and Altius of the similarities. Altius subsequently staked large blocks of claims along three identified structural trends of favourable rocks, alteration zones and gold showings. These targets have been identified along three regional trends referred to as the Mustang, Moosehead and Miguel Trends respectively. Since 1998, Altius has signed exploration-funding agreements
concerning a portfolio of properties. These properties have attracted financing from companies such as Barrick Gold, BHP-Billiton, Cameco Corporation, Inmet Mining, Agnico-Eagle Mines/Sudbury Contact Mines, and Teck-Cominco, among others.
One of the significant similarities of the Botwood Basin to Carlin is the very fine grained distribution of gold in highly altered carbonaceous sediments. Alteration includes packages of silicification (jasperoid), decalcification, and clay. Geochemistry has identified a strong arsenic, antimony and barite association with gold, again very similarto Carlin deposits.
Although a commercial ore deposit has yet to be identified in the area, several areas have been identified as having the potential for mineral resource.
