Regional Supply - Europe
European industrial wood pellet producers had nameplate capacity of approximately 6.9 million MTPA as
of September, 2017. Approximately 46% of Europe's industrial wood pellet capacity is produced in the Baltic
States (Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Lithuania), due in part to the significant forest resources of that region. The
balance of industrial wood pellet capacity is produced in Portugal, Germany and other regions. Due to the
strong demand for residential heating and industrial wood pellets within Europe, wood pellets produced locally
are typically consumed within the region. A portion of Europe's wood pellet capacity is used to supply the local
residential heating market. As European demand greatly exceeds regional supply, Europe is a net importer of
wood pellets, supplied predominantly by North American sources.
