Regional Supply - Rest of the World
Industrial wood pellet nameplate capacity outside of North America and Europe remains relatively modest,
accounting for approximately 3.3 million MTPA as of September, 2017, with much of this production located in
Southeast Asia. Although other regions of the world have considerable forest resources, the lack of developed
and reliable transportation and logistical infrastructure impede the ability of producers in other regions of the
world to produce and transport industrial wood pellets at economic prices. In addition, reduced transparency of
wood fibre supply and supply chain sustainability (or lack of forest land sustainability certification) has
discouraged major utility customers subject to stringent sustainability requirements from sourcing significant
volumes from these jurisdictions, limiting the development of these regions' industrial wood pellet
production capacity.
